Name Game

Now that I am married, I am getting asked all of the usual questions:

How does it feel to be married?

Are you going to have babies?

How many babies?

When?

What flavor?

But perhaps no question comes up more than "Is she going to take your last name?"

Which got me to thinking -

Is there ANY scenario that would make it ok for the guy to take the woman's name? I don't mean "OK" in the "We can do it!" Rosie the Riveter kind of way - but in the, "My friends won't make the whipped noise everytime I see them" kind of way.

Like what if your name was Harry Buttsmells. It is totally cool to switch then, right?

What about more realistic names like Weiner, Gay or Buttsmells?

And not just if you have a BAD name - what if she has an awesome name - like Incognito, Bond or Buttsmells?

Seriously, I need to know, because I'm sick of my friends making the whipped noise.

I think Narm Ochocinco has a nice ring to it.

I wanted to first say, that yesterday, my friend wore a Miami Dolphins shirt to my SuperBowl party because that's his favorite team. And I said "Who is a fan of the Miami Dolphins? Really??" And then I remember you were. So there are at least 2 of you out there. :)

Secondly, my friend Meghan's husband took her last name because there are literally no more of her family. I guess everyone had girl's so the name line was going to die, and her husband said he would take hers. Pretty nice.

On the other hand though, my friend David's wife, after a year and a half of marriage, still hadn't changed her name, so when he won a trip through work, he purposely put his last name down as her last name so she had to change it to make the flight. Evil really, and genius. :)

A few years ago a guy walked into my place of work saying he used to work there and wanted to say hi. I asked him his name and he told me, then said "but nobody will know me by that name. I got married and took my wife's last name." I think I snarfed a little because it was such a strange concept and he acted like it was NBD, but I guess it happens....

I was JUST thinking about this last night. Because my last name is completely awesome, but I like the symbolism of a couple having one last name when they get married. I think it is totally going to become a thing!
