Cut To The Chase

One of the great things about getting married is the ridiculous conversations the Lady Friend and I have been having. Last night she declared that if we were ever to have a boy flavored baby, she did not want him to be circumcised.

Yes, we sit around and talk about our non-existent children's privates, don't judge.

I was having none of this. I immediately blasted her with the voice of reason - there are health concerns, hygiene concerns and most importantly - getting made fun of in the gym class shower concerns. Ain't that right, Turtleneck?

After my tirade I asked her what possible reason she had for NOT wanting to have the kid circumcised.

Her response?

Not getting circumcised is in style right now.

Like little boy private parts are all the rage in this year's fall fashion line.

I can just see the Lady Friend walking down the street -

"Hey Sue! Nice shoes, but check out my baby boy's penis."

Well, she does love accessories.

Most men in the world aren't circumcised. It isn't "unclean" to be uncircumcised. My husband isn't circumcised and it makes no difference. I put "Getting your child circumcised" on the same ridiculous level as people who get their dog's ears cropped just for aesthetics. Unnecessary surgery is, well, unnecessary and cruel!

They all look the same in the dark.

Dude. Duuuuude. I gotta tell you, you need to do more research on this. Do your kid a favor and let him keep the foreskin. The ladies will LOVE him for it.

The midwest has a higher number of circumsized boys that anywhere else, statistically speaking, of course.

Both of my boys are circ'd. That's what I wanted to do for them and that was what my husband wanted. I have heard so much info from both camps and really, it comes down to what you, as a parent, want to do.

Talk with a few pediatricians and get their take on it. I will tell you this, after having both of mine done, I'm not sure I would do it again because of the pain they have to endure, possibility of infection and so on. It does decrease chances of certain ailments, but not enough to matter.

Don't shut your lady out on this one. Talk and research before you come to a final decision. Oh, and don't let anyone make you feel bad about your choice one way or another. I am on a mommy site and this is one area (one of many) that mothers like to bash other mothers, so I have seen it all said. I have to say, though, the cropping ears comment above is a first and a completely unnecessary and ridiculous comment at that.

It isn't unclean. It isn't weird. More and more boys are not getting circumcised, hence the whole "he is going to get made fun of" argument it moot.

It is mutilation. Straight up.

Compromise. You get the kid whacked. She gets to make accessory earrings out of the foreskin.

A - There's a higher risk of AIDS for UNcircumcised men. That's one reason AIDS is so prevelant in Africa.

B - Doctors sometimes make mistakes and cut little weewees off.

I know someone who had to have it done at 20, due to constant infections. Visiting him in the hospital with a huge tent over his midsection made me decide to have my boys get The Cut.
